Our labor unions are not narrow, self-seeking groups. They have raised wages, shortened hours and provided supplemental benefits. Through collective bargaining and grievance procedures, they have brought justice and democracy to the shop floor. JOHN F. KENNEDY, speech, Aug. 30, 1960

Why Unions Are Still Important Today
In today's world Unions are important, much more important than they have ever been. Corporations are now focused on profits at the expense of their employees. Work is changing in America and employers are trying to get rid of their responsibilities. Responsibilities including providing health care, pensions, reasonable working hours, and job safety protection. Employers are making jobs and income less secure through layoffs, part time work, or contracting work out. We the working people still need our voice to be heard. We do not need our jobs to become like the jobs of the past. We cannot stand for working in sweatshop conditions, earning wages that you can barely live on, and working 70 hours a week without overtime pay.
